Grants Clock Update: More than $3.4 billion in grants allocated to Michigan school districts so far this fiscal year
Launch Michigan, a nonprofit dedicated to reinventing Michigan’s public education system, today announced updates to its Grants Clock, a new tool designed to provide transparency regarding the public school grant distribution process and hold the state accountable for the efficient distribution of funds for classrooms.
As of January 1, 2025, more than 92% ($3.48 billion) of the $3.8 billion in grants Launch Michigan is tracking for the current fiscal year have been allocated.
$221 million of $275 million in competitive grants have been allocated.
$60.7 million of $126 million in direct grants have been allocated.
$2.2 billion of $2.3 billion in formula grants have been allocated.
$987.9 million of $1 billion in reimbursement grants have been allocated.
Launch Michigan is also celebrating the release of the Michigan Department of Education grants repository. The repository aims to assist intermediate school districts and local education agencies in quickly and easily finding grants that will be most helpful in meeting their needs and to allow district leaders more time to implement instructional practices that support students.
“The grants repository is an important step forward in providing greater access and transparency for educators and schools across the state,” said Venessa Keesler, president and CEO of Launch Michigan. “This resource is designed to streamline the grant process, making it easier for districts to find, apply for, and manage the funding they need to support student success.”
Prior to the launch of MDE’s grants repository, tracking available grants often meant searching through multiple sources to stay informed – an inefficient process that required educators and administrators to lose valuable time and resources. This repository changes that by centralizing available funding opportunities in one easy-to-use location.
“Launch Michigan has been working tirelessly to ensure accountability and transparency in education funding. The grants repository is just one example of the many process improvements Launch Michigan has been championing to make Michigan’s education system more efficient, equitable and accessible for all.”
Launch Michigan's Grants Clock provides updates on the status of each grant, tracking key metrics such as the total amount available, the number of days since the funds became available, and the percentage of funds that have been distributed.
In addition to tracking the distribution of funds, Launch Michigan has put forward several recommendations to streamline the grant process. These include prioritizing grants with the most direct impact on students, simplifying the application system by connecting it to existing district platforms, providing additional funding for the Michigan Department of Education to hire necessary staff and update IT systems, and partnering with organizations that can provide technical assistance to districts.
