Keesler: Grants Clock initiative holds education system accountable
As Michigan’s public schools enter the fall months, a critical issue continues to plague our education system: the slow and burdensome distribution of funds allocated by the state for K-12 schools.
Every year, the state Legislature and governor approve billions of dollars for public education. These funds are distributed to districts through a combination of scheduled payments and grants, the majority of which are distributed by the Michigan Department of Education. The intention behind these grants is to support schools and students, particularly in underserved districts, and provide resources to implement critical programs. However, despite the best intentions, funding is not getting to districts promptly, leaving schools struggling to plan and support students.
